Overview

A test installation can be created by doing a Clean Reinstallation with a copy of the database on a different server. It's important that you do your testing on a copy of the database and not the live database. This procedure assumes that you have migrated the built-in, SQL Compact, database that was created on first installation to a SQL Server.

Licensing

You may make copies of the software solely for testing, security, backup and archival purposes, provided that such a copy contains all of the original software copyright information and other proprietary notices. You may use your licence key as it appears in the License Information dialog to activate your test installation.

Procedure

Follow the steps for the type of server that is hosting your live installation.

Virtual Server

Virtual Server with SQL Database Hosted on the AuditWizard Server

  1. Back up your SQL database.
  2. Take a snapshot of the server.
  3. Create a duplicate of the server. Change the server name.
  4. Launch the virtual server and launch AuditWizard.
  5. If you are testing an upgrade to the latest version, download it from the Customer Portal and install it per the instructions in the latest Release Notes.

Virtual Server with SQL Database Hosted on a Different Server

  1. Back up your SQL database.
  2. Restore the backup with a different name, on the same SQL server or a different one. This will be the test database to prevent changes to the live database.
  3. Take a snapshot of the server.
  4. Create a duplicate of the server. Change the server name.
  5. Launch the virtual server and launch AuditWizard.
  6. Run the Change Database Wizard to change the SQL Server database connection to the test database.
  7. If you are testing an upgrade to the latest version, download it from the Customer Portal and install it per the instructions in the latest Release Notes.

Standalone Server

Preparation

  1. Establish which application version you are running.
  2. Compare it to the latest full version.
    1. If your version is the latest, download the full installer from here.
    2. If your version is earlier than the latest, contact Support for that specific version.
  3. Back up your SQL database.
  4. Restore the backup with a different name, on the same SQL server or a different one. This will be the test database to prevent changes to the live database.

Installation

  1. Install per the steps in Installation.
  2. Launch AuditWizard and activate your installation with your licence key.
  3. Cancel the Setup Wizard.

Configuration

  1. Go to Administration > General > Database Maintenance. Run the Change Database Wizard to connect to your test SQL database.
  2. The application will restart. When AuditWizard has restarted, cancel the Setup Wizard.
  3. Go to Administration > General > AuditWizard Services and configure your AuditWizard Service. Replicate the account you are using on the live installation.

Scanner and Agent Configuration

If you will be testing the Scanner or Agent, follow the steps in this section.

  1. Create a new Network Share for testing.
  2. Go to Administration > Auditing > AuditScanner Configuration. Enter the network share path and make any desired changes. Click the Save Configuration and Deploy to Network buttons.
  3. Go to Administration > Auditing > AuditAgent Configuration. Enter the network share path and make any desired changes. Click the Save Configuration button.

Update to Latest Version

If the test installation is intended to test an update to the latest version, refer to the release notes for details on upgrading.
